The 3 S’s in Mail Security: Safety, Screening and Security

How do you handle the safety in the mail center? How are you screening for potential threats? How secure is your mail center? Mail centers are often the doorway into your building. Many businesses have restricted access to their properties, while the mail centers often do not have that same level of scrutiny. The course will really look at how we handle items to keep our mail centers as safe as possible. What types of screening is available, but at a minimum, a visual inspection must be done on every piece of mail and every package that passes through our mail center. With assets often resting in our mail centers we also need to make sure we are maintaining the security and a chain of custody on trackable and items of value. The session will cover aspects of the 3 S’s that help us minimize risks for our company.

Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024 – Round Four, 1:30-2:30pm

SESSION SS285:

Mail Security: Is Your Organization at Risk?

The federal government updated its best practices for mail screening in 2023. Are you up to speed on the updated requirements? Maybe this is the first time you have heard about these updates? Mail Screening is required for federal agencies and highly recommended for at-risk private organizations. How do you know if you are at risk? How do you best establish a security program with the objective of assuring employee and customer safety, and protecting information and assets? All federal mail centers must have a written Mail Security Plan, regardless of the volume of mail received or processed. This type of written plan is highly recommended for private organizations as well. This session will highlight some of the key objectives to include in your Mail Security Plan, and, most importantly, implement into your mail screening operations.
