Don’t Send It: The Real Costs of Dangerous Mail and Counterfeit Postage

Headlines about the criminal misuse of the U.S. postal system often focus on illegal drugs and narcotics sent through the mailstream. But prohibited “dangerous mail,” which includes firearms, poisons, and explosives, also poses a serious threat to customers and mail handlers across the postal ecosystem. And a lesser-known threat to the nation’s postal system is the use of counterfeit postage, which defrauds the Postal Service of vital revenue and affects the bottom line of every business that transacts through the mail. In this session, Chief Postal Inspector Gary Barksdale discusses recent crime trends involving dangerous mail items and counterfeit postage and offers actionable steps attendees can take to better protect their employees, customers, and profit margins. With the continuous exponential growth of e-commerce and our domestic supply chain, the risk of improperly prepared or undeclared hazardous materials making their way into the mailstream continues to grow and shift. In fiscal year 2024 alone, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service opened 1,700 investigations into customer attempts to send hazardous materials through the mail. Join the Chief as he outlines the benefits of avoiding dangerous mail items and counterfeit postage: Increased safety for both employees and customers, and risk avoidance. Making AI Practical in Mail and Distribution

Artificial Intelligence is quickly becoming part of mail, print, and distribution operations; but success depends less on specific tools and more on making the right operational decisions early. There is over 90% failure rate for AI projects today. This session focuses on how mail and distribution leaders can evaluate, adopt, and govern AI responsibly within their own environments. Rather than prescribing a fixed set of use cases, the discussion centers on the operational foundations that determine whether AI delivers value at all; data readiness, workflow integration, accountability, and measurable outcomes. Attendees will be introduced to common AI patterns emerging across mailroom, print, logistics, and delivery operations, with brief examples to illustrate what is possible. The emphasis, however, is on helping participants determine which opportunities make sense for their organization, how to assess ROI, and how to avoid the most common mistakes that stall or derail AI initiatives. Participants will leave with a practical framework for deciding where AI fits into their workflows today, what must be in place before moving forward, and how to begin experimenting without unnecessary risk or disruption. Learn what a modern outsourced mailroom looks like, how the process generally works end-to-end, and what key outcomes leading organizations are achieving with this shift.
